Making the transition from researcher or clinician to educator can be challenging, requiring us to reconsider our professional identities. This course aims to support educators to consider the multiple roles they may be expected to perform, focussing on three elements: what makes a 'good' teacher; the practicalities of designing, delivering and assessing education; and the multifaceted professional identity of the teacher. By the end of the course, you should have developed a sound understanding of what it means to be a health-professions' educator in the 21st century and begun to consider how you manage your professional development as an educator.
This is a 6-week facilitated course with the opportunity to join weekly sessions where you can engage with like-minded professionals and experienced colleagues to share your understanding of the key concepts as well as furthering your knowledge. In addition, you’ll have access to our online learning platform and a range of resources especially designed to support directed self-learning. You should expect to spend around 8-10 hours per week engaging with the learning materials plus a further 10-20 hours preparing your assignment.
The course will run from 11th November – 20th December 2024, with submission of the final assignment by January 20th. Register by November 8th to secure your place.

In this module, you will explore the key elements that need to be considered when planning and designing learning, be this a single teaching event, a whole degree programme or a practice-based training programme. We will discuss ‘outcome based’ education and highlight the impact this has had on health professions’ education. Finally, we focus on the importance of writing good learning outcomes; this is an important skill that makes it easier to plan activities and assessments.
